Reading Workshop

Mini-Lesson (10-15 Min.)

Each Reading Workshop session will begin with a mini lesson that lasts approximately 10-15 minutes. During each mini lesson, the teacher will introduce a specific concept, also known as the teaching point. Most often the teaching point will focus on a reading strategy or skill.  The teacher will explicitly model or demonstrate the skill for the students.

Students then get a chance to practice the skill or strategy on their own or with a partner during literacy centers.   This part of the mini-lesson is called the active engagement.

Mini-lesson ideas will come from the acronym FACE- "The FACE of a Reader".  This idea came from another 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Maiolo. Links to sites with mini-lesson ideas can be found below.

F.A.C.E. Mini-lesson/Book Ideas

Fluency

Use punctuation- Yo? Yes!

Accuracy

Use the pictures: Noisy Nora/Goodnight Gorilla

Cross Checking Song- http://vimeo.com/7605998  Movement- To make an X, we put one arm up in front of our chest for "Does this word make sense?" and the other arm crossing it for "The letters match the word."
Beginning and Ending Sounds-For this strategy I start off with "guess the covered word".
For example, on chart paper, I write:
●Kaylee’s favorite food is pizza.
●I cover up the whole word "pizza" with post-its. I call on a few students to tell me a food. We talk about how we know it's going to be a food word because the rest of the sentence "favorite food" helped us figure that out.
They may come up with a list like : cake, cookies, tacos, etc...
●I then uncover the first letter "p" and we look back at our list and cross off any words that don't start with "p". We then may have to add words to our list, so we add food words that start with "p".
●I then uncover the last letter and we go through our list and look for words that end in "a". We then cross off words that don't end in "a".
By this time we look at the whole word.
●We talk about how knowing the first and last letter in a word can often help us figure out the whole word.

Flip the Sound- Make cards with sight words pictures and a mix of long and short vowel words. I modeled using the wrong vowel sound and when cross checking I notice that it kind of looked right, but did not sound right, so we all flipped our hands palms up to palms down and practiced flipping the vowel sounds. Voila, it looked right, sounded right and made sense with the pictures.  A website to use to make sight word pictures http://www.rockingham.k12.va.us/sound_sorting/sound_sorting_menu.htm

Comprehension

Check for Understanding- We made a check mark in the air, asking "Who?" on the downward motion and "What happened?" on the upward motion.
Tune in to Interesting Words- We rub our ear like Carol Burnett used to do at the end of her show. While I'm reading aloud, I'll say, "Boy, I'm gonna tune in to that word," rub my ear, and repeat it.
Back up and reread- We put our thumb over our shoulder like we're hitchhiking
.

Inferences: My kids put their hand behind their head, touching their brain, and the other hand in front like they are reading a book, palm up. Then when we make an inference, we say, "Take what you already know and put it with what you are reading." Then we smack them together.

Problem and Solution- Books to use:  any version of the 3 Little Pigs, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,

Sequencing- Books to use:  The House That Jack Built, There Was An Old Lady That Swallowed a Fly, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Dogzilla

Predictions- Books to use: Ira Sleeps Over, The Salamander Room, Officer Buckle and Gloria,

Cause and Effect- If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday, The Day Jimmy’s Boa Ate the Wash,  The Napping House, The Giant Jam Sandwich, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Stephanie’s Ponytail, Tacky the Penguin

Schema- The Relatives Came, Oliver Button is a Sissy, Ira Sleeps Over, any Kevin Henkes books, No David books

Story Elements- fairy tales, any Kevin Henkes books, Koala Lou, individual Frog and Toad stories

Expand Vocabulary.

Context Clues- . One book that I use to introduce using text to help figure out the meaning of words in Baloney (Henry P.) by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. It uses words from 20 different languages in the story. Your class will have a great time trying to figure out what each word means by using context clues. We make predictions about the meanings. At the end of the book it has the language it is and meaning.

Fancy Nancy- talk about fancy words.  On chart paper make a pair of “fancy pants” on it.  Whenever anyone comes across “fancy pants” words, we write on the chart.

Literacy Activities (60 min.)

As I meet with each guided reading group (3 per day)

students will rotate to the following literacy activities:

Independent Reading
Why we do this?  The best way to become a better reader is to practice, practice, practice each day!  Read to Self helps us become better readers and it is fun!
Partner Reading

When students are reading with partners, they take their book boxes and read just-right books or I read to you - you read to me books together.  Partners are taught to sit "EEKK"(elbow to elbow; knee to knee).  Students make decisions together about where they want to red, what they want to read, and how they want to read (echo, choral, etc.)  Students are taught to Check for Understanding when partner reading.  This helps improve comprehension.
Why we do this? Reading with a partner is fun and helps us become more fluent readers.  It also helps us improve our reading comprehension.

Word Study
When students choose Word Study, they will be working on their weekly word sort.  After they practice sorting words they have several other word study activities they can complete.
Why we do this?  Word work allows us to learn about words, to expand our vocabulary, and to become better spellers.  Our writing is important to us and correct spelling allows our readers to have a better understanding and appreciation of our writing.

Listening Center
When students choose Listen to Reading, they can either listen to stories on the computer or books on tape.
Why we do this?  Listening to books on tape is fun and helps us to become more fluent readers and exposes us to a variety of genres.

Journal Writing
Students write in their daily journals, this is a free writing time.  Writing focus lessons is taught during our 6 Traits writing block.

Wrap- Up (5 min.)
At the end of the Guided Reading/Literacy Activities students will clean up.  We will meet as a class to share reading successes and problem solve together as needed.
